Why is it important to acknowledge the online community of our students?

The online community is so vast and ever changing and progressing daily, that I think it would be a shame for students to not get a chance to participate. I believe students learn best with things that are familiar to them and catch their interest. The online community is large and to have students participate in that can not only be beneficial for them to learn, but can help them connect to other students, possibly even world wide and learn from them as well. As we watched in the anthropologist video, Youtube and other online communities are not just for entertainment. It allows students to be creative and expressive and it allows them the freedom, (within boundaries) ,to effectively post projects or use videos and other webpages as great resources. If we hold them back from one of the greatest technologies ever created, how could we call ourselves effective educators? If we want to connect with our students and have them connect to the world wide web community, we need to get with the times, be creative ourselves, and find ways for that to happen in our curriculums.
